Civitas’ DecisionMaker Poll has consistently shown that the vast majority of North Carolinians support comprehensive immigration enforcement and reform at both the federal and local levels. Below is a sampling from our monthly DecisionMaker poll of registered voters.
Voters Want Immigration Law to Be Enforced
- 91% of N.C. voters support giving law enforcement officers the technology needed to confirm the identity and legal status of a driver who does not possess a valid driver’s license (April 2008).
- 89% of N.C. voters support allowing police officers to ask arrestees if they are legal residents of the United States (September 2007).
- 88% of N.C. voters support county participation in the 287(g) program (July 2007).
- 84% of N.C. voters support deporting illegal immigrants found guilty of driving while intoxicated (May 2007).
- 81% of N.C. voters support securing the border and enforcing America’s immigration laws before new immigration laws are passed (June 2007).
- 68% of N.C. voters oppose amnesty (June 2007).
- 67% of N.C. voters support holding illegal immigrants arrested for a crime without bail until trial (September 2007).
- 59% of N.C. voters support deporting illegal immigrants found guilty of a misdemeanor criminal violation (September 2005).
Voters Want to Limit Welfare Benefits to U.S. Citizens
- 81% of N.C. voters oppose giving non-emergency state benefits to illegal immigrants over age 18 (July 2006).
- 81% of N.C. voters support requiring applicants for state benefits to prove legal residency (July 2006).
- 79% of N.C. voters think illegal immigration is a burden to our state (May 2008).
- 73% of N.C. voters oppose providing interpreters to help illegal immigrants obtain state services, including social services and healthcare (August 2005).
Voters Want to Limit Educational Benefits to U.S. Citizens
- 76% of N.C. voters support charging out-of-state tuition for illegal immigrants attending community colleges and public universities (February 2008).
- 73% of N.C. voters oppose paying higher taxes for special school programs for non-English speaking students (July 2005).
- 69% of N.C. voters oppose providing education benefits to illegal immigrants (August 2005).
- 68% of N.C. voters oppose allowing illegal immigrants to enroll in community colleges (February 2008).
Voters Want Employers to Obey Immigration Law
- 91% of N.C. voters support requiring employers to verify the legal status of anyone they employ (April 2008).
- 80% of N.C. voters support fining employers who knowingly hire illegal immigrants (September 2005).
- 72% of N.C. voters oppose issuing worker permits to illegal immigrants (February 2006).
