Basnight Construction was awarded subcontracted work on part of the new $25 million Jennette’s Pier project currently under construction in Nags Head. The amount of money the construction company is obtaining is undisclosed.
President Pro Tempore Marc Basnight (D-Dare) was a huge behind-the-scenes advocate who pushed to build the multimillion dollar project. Due to his efforts, House Bill 628, “Aquarium Satellite Areas Funding” was able to fly through the Legislature in April 2009 and receive unanimous approval from lawmakers.
President of Basnight Construction for the last two decades, the Senator’s history with the company began in 1973 when he founded it. He serves as an active board member and is now registered with North Carolina State Department as the company’s treasurer, while his cousin, James Basnight, is registered as president.

This may seem prejudiced being that I live in Manteo. I have received bids a few times for work from Basnight Construction. They have always been the low bidder, arrive promptly on the day scheduled and complete the work in a timely manner. Always leave the jobsite clean and have never billed me for the little extras they do. There are very few contractors available locally that perform the services they do so it is understanding that they are awarded the contracts they receive. Marc Basnight is not involved in the day to day operations and even if he was it does not prove any improprieties. The small salary that our Legislators recive requires most to obtain income from another source. This article seems more like a witch hunt than providing news. I have many political differences with our Senator but pushing this project through so he may personally benefit is not one of those differences. Find another angle.
