Budget cuts at UNC-Chapel Hill are already making a positive impact. University officials decided to cancel the Tar Heel Bus Tour, an annual road trip across the state for new faculty members.
Last year’s four day trip consisted of 17 separate stops including a boat ride with the Institute of Marine Sciences, a visit to Hickory Nut Gap Farm to sample spring house meats, and a scenic tour of the Blue Ridge parkway narrated by one of Carolina’s own historians.
I always thought being a university professor was a cushy job, who knew they paid for your vacation too?
University officials have not returned my calls about the cost of the trip. I consider the cancellation a victory for both tax and tuition payers.

*Update: Last year’s trip cost $57,000 and a university representative was not sure where the money came from.
Hi, will keep you updated on my journey into UNC-C’s education world. Am a Senior Citizen, UNCC has a program geared to “help” old folks. My goal – to take the classes w/o taking the full degree (other classes needed), on a scholarship or grant. Meeting with the Dean next week. Let’s see what happens. Just a detour of what your blog is. Call it a service road.
