TBJ is running an informal poll on whether the community college system was right to bar illegal aliens from degree programs. 72 percent say yes.
Civitas’ polling of actual voters arrives at a similar conclusion.
68 percent of voters believe illegal aliens should be prohibited from enrolling in community colleges and public universities in North Carolina (February 2008).
70 percent of voters oppose granting in-state tuition to illegal aliens (April 2007).
75 percent would be less likely to vote for a candidate who supports giving in-state tuition to the children of illegal immigrants (September 2005).
69 percent believe illegal immigrants should receive no educational benefits at all from the state of North Carolina (August 2005).
Random Charlottean says
In a free for all market economy, it would seem completely logical that somebody–anybody–who pays out-of-state tuition, which would be the case of illegal immigrants, should be able to study at a community college, or public university for that matter.
Out-of-state tuition “more than covers” (read any study on the issue) the tuition of a student.
I thought unrestricted capitalism was all about profiting without caring from whom…
Admission does not equal having to pay in-state tuition, therefore no tax money would be “taken away”. Your forgot to mention those points in your argument.
Jameson Taylor says
Out-of-state tuition, in fact, does not cover the costs to attend a public university or community college. According to the North Carolina Community College System Fact Book, tuition funds comprise only 12.5 percent of total community college operating expenses. State and local funds – i.e., state and local taxpayers – comprise 82 percent of all funding for the community college system.
Moreover, I am not a fan of “unrestricted capitalism” — to say the least because man cannot solely be defined as an economic being. Hence, free market exchange only accounts for one aspect of the human person, an aspect that must be balanced against other factors and, by no means, takes precedence over these other factors.
