At a speech in Georgia earlier this week, Democratic Presidential candidate Barack Obama told the audience, "Instead of worrying about whether immigrants can learn English —
they’ll learn English — you need to make sure your child can speak
Spanish. You should be thinking about, how can your child become
bilingual?"
Apparently, an overwhelming majority of voters disagree with him. According to a Rasmussen poll: Eighty-three percent (83%) place a higher priority on encouraging
immigrants to speak English as their primary language. Just 13% take
the opposite view and say it is more important for Americans to learn
other languages.
That’s an either or, your making a false argument. Barack Obama is not saying immigrants SHOULDN’T learn English. He is saying that in ADDITION, Americans should learn second languages.
That is a much different argument.
Sigh, first it should be “you’re”. Second, I should be more clear. The poll is asking an either/or question. Which is more important, A or B. Of course most people think A is MORE important. Obama is not saying it isn’t, he is saying that B in addition to A will be important to our kid’s futures as well.
