The state Senate voted 39-5 to let the Robeson County town of Pembroke impose a tax on hotel rooms there. The only hotel in Pembroke, a 62-room Holiday Inn Express, opposes the tax, which would be 3 percent of the price of a room and be levied in addition to the 7.75 percent sales tax.
Estimates for the tax’s annual revenues ranged from $21,600 to $40,000, depending upon who was doing the figuring. The law would say the money must be used to promote tourism in Pembroke.
Who cares if you don’t want to be taxed. Government knows better than you how you should promote your business.
