Turnout by voters in both political parties was up significantly compared to the 2004 primary election. With a highly contested Democratic presidential primary, turnout by Democrats was nearly three times higher than in 2004, and approximately three-fourths of voters requested Democratic ballots. Republican turnout was up more than 25 percent compared to 2004.
