State government here in North Carolina is really cut to the bone. The recession has lawmakers doing a lot of belt-tightening. Things are so bad off, in fact, that the state could only afford $3.3 million for a solar-powered “welcome center.”
The North Carolina Department of Transportation opened the state’s first environmentally-friendly rest station early this month.
The $12 million, 10,000-square-foot building features solar panels, geothermal wells for heating and cooling, and a rain-water collection system.
(Sarcasm/Off)
This former Civitas Bad Bill of the Week became reality recently, and stands as yet another monument in government waste.
Why are taxpayers subsidzing potty-breaks for highway travelers in the first place?
NOTE: This original post had a figure of $12 million for the welcome center. The WRAL article has since been changed, this post reflects that change. (HT: CH)
