Yesterday NC DPI released the 2016-17 School Performance and Growth Report. It’s easy to get lost in the all the data, but if you’re truly interested in public education, you’ll take a serious look at this report. Once you get past NC DPI’s spin, you’ll find the overall numbers are not encouraging. What do I mean?
45.9 percent of students in Grades 3 through 8 are proficient in both math and reading.
35.2 percent of traditional public schools are listed as A or B schools, yet only 59 percent of 11th graders met the UNC minimum ACT score of 17.

Having been an Educator in Boston MA, Minneapolis MN, Raleigh NC and Florida, I can factually state that in the South, the statistics never correlate to the attitudes and policies. The top 10 Literate cities in the US are all in Blue States. The most Illiterate are in the Red States. There should be something learned by what works and what doesn’t but that discussion happens.

This is how well a literate state is doing.With its higher cost of living, California’s poverty rate is 20.6 percent, the highest in the nation, and economic distress is evident. In May, state finance officials said sales-tax revenue came in far below expectations, likely because wages were lower. The governor’s January budget proposal said that over the past four years, “the percentage of wage and salary growth from high-wage sectors dropped from 50 percent to 36 percent of total growth.” Cap and trade began in 2012.

I’m not infallible Larry, nor have I claimed to be. I would say metro cities in Georgia and Ohio are most likely Blue (as are metro area’s across the country). Either way, 8 of the Top 10 most literate cities are in Blue State. Note also: “Cities” I’m quite sure if it was States, all 10 would be north of the Mason-Dixon line.
I’ve been an educator in the various places (in the North and South) I mentioned, and have taught and studied at every level. I’ve seen it first hand for many years.
