If you frequent the Raleigh favorite, Snoopy’s Hot Dogs, you might have seen a sign that read, “Mr. Obama, I did create this business -Steve Webb.”
Recent comments made by the President have angered many local business owners, such as Steve Webb, owner of Snoopy’s Hot Dogs & More. Mr. Webb said in a telephone interview, “Mr. Obama made me ill in his remarks” when he said in a recent campaign rally, “If you’ve got a business, you didn’t build that. Somebody else made that happen.” Other than the few friends and $6,000 that helped Steve open on that first day, he would disagree with this notion that someone else was responsible for his success.
Steve is the owner and founder of the local hot dog favorite, Snoopy’s Hot Dogs. Since it has opened at its first location on Wake Forest Road, Mr. Webb has expanded to four other locations throughout Raleigh. As Mr. Webb tells it, “we’ve been blessed” to have such success with opening a restaurant. He claims that, “it wouldn’t have happened,” had he tried to start his local restaurant in today’s business environment.
Mr. Webb’s story is one of many business owners. The genius and the courage to take a risk, put forth the money out of your own pocket, and start a business of your own. Mr. Webb remarks that “I always do what I can to help other folks.”
Later in the interview, Steve explained that the government is actually the one working against him, much less helping him: “If you own a small business like I have all these years, you’ve watched it [regulation]…its like poison ivy…its actually strangling us.” Mr. Webb explains further that most regulations make sense, but in the end the weight of all of the rules just suffocate his business.
Many others, just as Steve Webb, are barely staying afloat in this economy. Folks are truly offended when remarks are made that liken the government to a friend who created your business for you. Remember, if it wasn’t for a genius idea and a lot of hard work, Steve Webb would not be where he is today.

…I’m with Mr. Webb….I and only I built my own business…*not* the d–n government. Everyone needs to try to run their own business at least once in their lives…along with a good econ 101, and history lesson.

…this is what happens when you get your information from one source. Do your own research, get both sides and real information. And if you believe everything you hear in political ads and from talking heads, no matter which side you are on, then you will always take a stance on something stupid. Wake Up People!

To A Realist:
I did take time to read the whole transcript of the Presidents’ recent speech. That is why so many people are troubled by this comment. I believe Mr. Webb wants to reiterate that he is the sole proprietor of his idea and success, along side the help of his employees. Remember, “whats variable is the energy, enterprise, risk-taking, hard work, and genius of the individual” -Charles Krauthammer
Jocko1960 says
But unlike a smart person Mr. Webb didn’t read the whole transcript and only believed what he was told by people who want to control what he thinks.

As a long time hot dot consumer I can say that there is no government regulation required to make the idea and hard work of Steve Webb successful. Is it possible that those who aren’t offended by POTUS’ remarks concerning small businesses may have never had the entrepreneurial gumption to start their on business. Kudos to Steve, his ideas, his industriousness and the best hot dogs in the United States. Stay the course Steve…we’re gonna take our country back.

Mr Webb, i understand you are ignorant to the facts at hand, what i don’t understand is why you would put up a sign outside of your establishment that lets everyone else know you are ignorant to the facts…

Individuals on the “anti Obama” bandwagon will look for any excuse to bash him. The “If you’ve got a business, you didn’t build that” comment once again has been taken completely out of context. I wonder how many other business owners will break the Golden Rule of mixing business and politics at the cost of possibly loosing a good portion of their Customer base.
It doesnt matter says
And I ment he like to see black people work like slaves that why he let them work at Snoopys
Mark Coggins says
So lets look back at the comment in context, as everyone is screaming we do. He said such statements as there are a lot of hard workers out there and there are a lot of smart people out there. By relating these comments to the “you didn’t build that, somebody else made that happen,” he diminished the intelligence and work ethic of those who are successful. The underlying message here is that he sees a society in which everyone is exactly the same. And those who excel should not be rewarded by their own merit.
Lee Griffin says
When Pres. Obama’s comments are veiwed in the context of his entire speech, it is obvious that he was, in fact, diminishing individual achievement in favor of a collectivist view: That is what is so damning about his comments. The collective built everything, and the collective deserves to benefit from the hard work of the individuals who excel and rise above the other individuals of the collective.
And besides, if Pres. Obama were a better speaker and hadn’t left the unclear reference to “that,” and instead had said “roads and bridges,” he wouldn’t have to back pedal now. He stepped in it by revealing himself for the collectivist he actually is.
Mark Coggins says
Well said, Lee. The rest of the context actually cemented this collectivist view point
RoughAcres says
Lee Griffin, what is “obvious” is, you did not view the entire speech.
President Obama simply said the roads and bridges to transport goods and services to/from a business… the educational system to educate the workers who are hired… the internet on which a business’ website exists… the police and firefighting agencies protecting the business… were NOT built by business owners, but by us ALL.
That’s true.
As for “that,” it’s only unclear if one takes the quote OUT of context, which Mr. Romney’s people have done.

Holy Crap you Obama people are so off base.
Go get your welfare and food stamps while the rest of us(mostly small buisness owners) work to support you.
Hey Obama redistribute my work ethic not my wealth.

Mr Webb
God bless you for having the stones to make a stand.
