Joe Neff’s article in this morning’s News & Observer gets it right: the real impact of the UNC tuition break for athletic and academic scholarships has been to increase the percentage of out-of-state students and make it harder for average students to gain admission to places like UNC-Chapel Hill.
During the last budget cycle, UNC institutions — including UNC-Chapel Hill — were asked to find millions in spending reductions. In an earlier blog post I pointed out UNC’s athletic endowment per student athlete ($485,126) is nearly four times larger than its undergraduate endowment per student ($122,784). That said, you have to ask: Is it really necessary for UNC-Chapel Hill to be providing well-off booster clubs with tuition breaks?
