Governor Perdue rolled out her budget proposal today and before the ink is dry, the press is already misreporting the facts. (We'll have much more on the budget later today and this week).
The N&Charlotte O — they are practically one paper now, so we might as well call them as such — reports "Perdue's budget plan cuts more than 1,000 NC jobs".
While that is quite a bold headline, the truth is a little less dramatic.
While her budget does eliminate 1,411 positions. 444 of those are currently vacant.
Of the remaining 967 filled positions, they are expecting to reassign 619 of those employees to other jobs within state government.
So in actuality, only 268 jobs are being cut. A far cry from what the headline writers would have you believe.
But why let the facts stand in the way of sensationalism.
