The Democratic primary in Senate District 3 is setting up to be a doozy. Incumbent Sen. Clark Jenkins is facing a primary challenge from African-American businessman Frankie Bordeaux. The district, encompassing all of Edgecombe and Martin counties and most of Pitt county is roughly 50% black by voter registration. Jenkins, in his fourth term, is white.
At a campaign event on Wednesday evening, Bordeaux’s wife told the audience:
“Why can’t we have someone in that seat who is qualified to do the job and who also looks and sounds like the people he represents?”
What in the world could she be telling voters? Someone from Edgecombe county? Someone tall?
So much for Dr. King’s vision of people being judged by the content of their character.
