A bill just approved by the NC House would authorize Wake, Orange and Durham counties to levy another 1/2 cent to their sales tax, pending voter approval.
A couple of things for voters in those counties to consider. First, most of the money from the new sales tax would go to finance a light rail boondoggle – which amounts to low-income people subsidizing the transport of upper-class urban yuppies.
Secondly, adding another 1/2 cent to the recently approved full cent statewide sales tax hike just approved by Gov. Perdue would bring the total sales tax rate in those select counties to 8.25%. Only two states have an average total (state plus local) sales tax rate higher than 8.25% – Tennessee and Washington. And both of those states don’t tax income.
