Complaints about voter fraud at UNC-Chapel Hill continued over the weekend. Taylor Holgate filed her second complaint with the Student Supreme Court last Saturday to seek a re-vote in Student Congress District 5-Greek housing. According to the Daily Tar Heel,
As many as 296 students could have had problems voting in the student body election Feb. 9 because of incorrect class or residential information.
The Tar Heel junior lost her race by only 25 votes, which she claims could be the result of technical problems. But UNC’s own “Greek Tragedy” may not conclude for another few weeks as the Student Supreme Court agreed Sunday to hear the case after Spring Break.
Many UNC students support Holgate’s efforts saying they deserve representatives elected by a fair system, according to the campus newspaper. You can check out the list of court documents here and follow the case at dailytarheel.com.
Douglas Adams says
Sore loser. What difference does it make if she only lost by 1 vote? The Student Supreme Court is humoring the ill feelings of a candidate who cannot accept her own loss.
Students can select the district they live in. Its part of the Honor Code when you vote for student government. Holgate is accusing the student body of secretly choosing different districts to allow the other candidate to win.
“Voter fraud” is not what’s going on here. Its distrust of the honor system.
Jayme Mullins says
The article she uses says everything necessary. The Daily Tar Heel clearly stated that 296 students may have had problems voting on the day of elections. Taylor Holgate is not being a “sore loser” and she certainly is not attacking the honor system. It appears that all she wants is a fair election by her peers, who may have been cheated out of a correct vote by technological short-comings. I believe our school owes us that much.
